Secnidazole (sek-NID-a-zole)
Treats vaginal infection caused by bacteria and trichomoniasis (an infection of the sex organs in men or women caused by protozoa).

This medicine is not right for everyone. Do not use it if you had an allergic reaction to secnidazole or similar medicines, or if you have Cockayne syndrome (genetic disorder).How to Use This Medicine:
Granule
- Your doctor will tell you how much medicine to use. Do not use more than directed.
- Sprinkle the granules on soft food (including applesauce, yogurt, or pudding). Swallow the mixture within 30 minutes without chewing or crunching the granules. You may drink a glass of water to help you swallow. Do not dissolve the granules in any liquid.
- Take all of the medicine in your prescription to clear up your infection, even if you feel better after the first few doses.
- Read and follow the patient instructions that come with this medicine. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions.
- Missed dose: Take a dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, wait until then and take a regular dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.
- Store the medicine in a closed container at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light.
Drugs and Foods to Avoid:
Ask your doctor or pharmacist before using any other medicine, including over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.
- Do not drink alcohol during treatment and for at least 2 days after the last dose.
Warnings While Using This Medicine:
- Tell your doctor if you are pregnant.
- Your doctor may tell you to stop breastfeeding, and pump and discard your breast milk for at least 4 days (96 hours) after treatment with this medicine.
- This medicine can cause the following problems:
- Increased risk for vaginal yeast infection
- Possible risk for cancer (with long-term use)
- Trichomoniasis treatment: Your doctor may want to treat your sexual partner, even if he or she has no symptoms. Use a condom during sexual intercourse. These measures will help keep you from getting the infection again from your partner. If you have any questions, ask your doctor.
- Your doctor will check your progress and the effects of this medicine at regular visits. Keep all appointments.
- Keep all medicine out of the reach of children. Never share your medicine with anyone.
Possible Side Effects While Using This Medicine:
Call your doctor right away if you notice any of these side effects:
- Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing
- Unusual bleeding, bruising, or weakness
- Vaginal discharge and itching
If you notice these less serious side effects, talk with your doctor:
- Change in taste, loss of taste
- Diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain
- Headache
If you notice other side effects that you think are caused by this medicine, tell your doctor
