Las pruebas o exámenes comunes que se utilizan para evaluar qué tan bien está funcionando el hígado. Los examenes incluyen:

• Albúmina
• Alfa-1 antitripsina
• Fosfatasa alcalina (FA)
• Alamina aminotransferasa (ALT)
• Aspartato aminotransferasa (AST)
• Gamma-glutamil transpeptidasa (GGT)
• 5' nucleotidasa
• Tiempo de protrombina, también expresado como razón normalizada internacional (INR)
• Bilirrubina en suero
• Bilirrubina en orina
